This is my friend Kalie Johnson. Kalie has owned and operated Colonial Oyster Company since 2015 (and all by herself I might add). A Virginia native, she’s grown up surrounded by the water and has always been interested in what lies beneath and just how important aquaculture is to the coast. I had the pleasure of documenting her at the crack of dawn as she harvested her oyster cages (my boots still smell like the terrible black sludge). Kalie is part of an ongoing photo project about the new and traditional ways of Virginia’s Watermen.
